Money may not be able to buy happiness, but it’s necessary for many other things in life. Electricians are one of the highest-paid trade positions, and there is a frequent demand for overtime for electricians in the Bluegrass.
The average cost of a four-year degree at a public university is a staggering $140,000, and a degree doesn’t guarantee you a job. You can begin your electrician career as soon as you graduate from high school, and many apprenticeship programs (including ours) pay you while you work toward becoming licensed.
People will need electricians to keep systems working correctly as long as they use electricity. This means that you will make it through economic downturns unscathed. The demand for electricians also means you can find work any time of year.
Does the thought of sitting at a desk for eight hours a day make you cringe? Electricians work on-site, so you’ll never be stuck in an office, and each day will be different from the last. You must quickly adapt to unexpected problems or situations that arise during a job.
You will never worry about feeling underappreciated when you have skills crucial for society's day-to-day operations. Working with electrical equipment can be incredibly dangerous, and the training you undergo to perform your job safely is admirable.
Everyone begins their electrician career as an apprentice. This process takes about a couple years to complete, after which you take an exam to become a licensed journeyman. Many people remain at this level for the duration of their career, but you can also advance to the position of master electrician after two years as a licensed journeyman. Master electricians can work without supervision and can train apprentices. They must have extensive knowledge of complex electrical equipment, systems, and blueprint creation.
