Four Skills All Electricians Need

Being a good electrician requires knowledge and training alongside many other skills. Having decades of experience, we here at Walker Electric know what skills are necessary for someone to succeed as an electrician. While there are all kinds of skills needed to be a good electrician, these are some essential skills required to ensure your success.

Understanding the Basics and Safety

Being a good electrician requires the skills to perform all the different things that electricians do daily. Whether running conduits or knowing how to work on transforms, generators, and other electrical systems, being familiar with the basics is paramount to being a good electrician. This knowledge will give you an excellent foundation to build off and the information you need to stay safe.

Safety is the most important thing to be aware of when working on any job site - understanding how electrical systems work will enable you to be safe when working with them. Having a firm grasp of all the appropriate safety codes and guidelines will ensure that you do not make any critical mistakes that could endanger you or anyone else.

Physical Stamina and Manual dexterity

In addition to all the things you must know to be a good electrician, there is also the physical nature of the job. Even if it may not be directly evident, much of what an electrician does requires good physical fitness. From standing for long periods, scaling ladders, bending down and crouching, to even crawling on your hands and knees, the body can accumulate quite a bit of physical stress while working as an electrician.

Then, there are all fine motor movements as well - being dexterous is especially important when working with tiny wires, delicate tools, and other systems requiring precise hand movement. Hand-eye coordination is key to being successful as an electrician, so you will also need good vision and dexterity.

Problem Solving Skills

Solving problems is one of the things that all electricians must do every single day. Figuring out how to wire something, why a particular system is acting in a certain way, or why something isn't working are examples of how electricians have to solve problems. Being able to think critically is vitally essential to being an electrician. These skills will help you isolate variables in complex systems and get to the source of different electrical problems. Thinking outside of the box will help you find solutions to issues that look almost impossible to fix otherwise.

Able to Work Independently and On a Team

Electricians may work alone or as a larger team, depending on the work. Either way, electricians need to be capable of doing both. Having the knowledge and confidence to accomplish tasks on your own is just as important as being able to listen to and cooperate with others. Both skill sets will enable you to get more jobs and succeed at those jobs.
